Certification bodies run the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits behind an ISO/IEC 42001 certificate and issue the certificate itself. Under ISO/IEC 17021-1 they must stay impartial, so a body that certifies you cannot also consult on building your management system: that work belongs to a governance consultant. What distinguishes them commercially is accreditation. A certificate carries weight when the body is accredited by a national accreditation body such as UKAS, RvA, or ANAB, and buyers increasingly ask which one. Note that ISO 42001 is not a harmonized standard under the EU AI Act and confers no presumption of conformity; the Act's harmonized quality management standard is EN 18286:2026, published in July 2026 and awaiting citation in the Official Journal.
